Q: Where is your hometown and where are you located now?
A: I grew up in Naramata, B.C., left for 10 years after high school and then returned back to Naramata to raise my two girls. I’m currently working out of my home office.
Q: What did you take at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û²éѯ? When did you graduate?
A: I took the Sustainable Building Technology Diploma (formerly known as the Sustainable Construction Management Technology Diploma) at the Penticton Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û²éѯ campus and graduated in May of 2019.
Q: What is your current position?
A: I’m currently an Energy Advisor with 3West Building Energy Consultants Inc.
Q: Why did you choose your program at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û²éѯ? How does it relate to what you’re doing now?
A: I chose the SBT program because I have always had a passion for all encompassing sustainability and unique building practices. I felt as though this program offered at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û²éѯ would help me incorporate both of those passions into a solid and fulfilling career which would ultimately help tackle global climate change.
Q: What was one of your most meaningful memories during your time at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û²éѯ?
A: It’s hard to pick just one meaningful memory, there were many from the SBT program. You spend so much time with your cohort it felt like a second family. We were all there to support and encourage one another every day. I especially found memorable hearing other student’s imagined business pitches at the end of our second year, to see how far everyone had come in those two years and the passions each of us had found. I still hope to one day bring to fruition that composting business model!
Q: What do you think has been the biggest turning point for your career success?
A: Choosing the path of becoming an Energy Advisor has been the biggest turning point for my career success. Gaining confidence in the industry and putting one foot in front of the other to complete all the certification steps, alongside pursuing a local job opportunity, have all landed me in a position I am extremely happy with.
Q: What advice would you pass on to current/future students?
A: The SBT diploma program is invaluable with the direction construction is heading and you’ll be rewarded with many diverse job opportunities after graduating. The team of professors have a huge wealth of knowledge and there is a lot of information and deliverables packed into the two-year program, sometimes it may feel overwhelming. Try to take what you can out of every day and if there are topics you want to dive deeper into, the resources will be there when you find the time. This program is well worth completing and all the professors are there to help you succeed!
Q: When you’re not working, what are you doing?
A: Raising two strong incredible girls, hiking, photography, running, cross-country skiing, reading and hopefully travelling the world again one day soon!
